Niagara Falls Attractions
Needless to say, the main attraction in this city are the Niagara Waterfalls. Also called les Chutes du Niagara, Niagara Falls is actually made up for three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls/Canadian Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. The falls are found on Niagara River, in between the United States and Canada, and its name is shared not only by the city of Niagara Falls in Ontario, but that of Niagara Falls, New York.
To help visitors appreciate the scenic beauty of Niagara Falls, there several things to visit or see:
- Queen Victoria Park, with its gardens, platforms, and underground observation rooms
- Skylon Tower, with its highest aerial view of the falls and everything around it (the other towers are the Minolta Tower and the Falls Tower)
- Maid of the Mist, with its trips and boats that bring passengers alongside the American and Bridal Veil Falls and into the Horseshoe Falls
- Whirlpool Aero Car, with its cable car tour over the whirlpool in the Niagara River
- Journey Behind the Falls, with its tunnels and observation platform that provide a full view of the waterfalls looking up
- Nightly Illumination of the Falls, with its high-powered lights to be enjoyed from dusk to midnight.
Numerous stunts have also challenged the waterfalls: tightrope walks--even blindfolded and cooking an omelet on a stove!--or plunges with barrels and watercraft. Not everyone was as lucky as Sam Patch, Jean Francois "Blondin" Gravelet, or Annie Edson Taylor ("Queen of the Mist"), though.
The natural wonders in this city do not end with the falls, though. Also visit the Flower Clock, Flower Showhouse, Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Conservatory, Aviary, Niagara Glen, and Welland Canal. Take it a step further with a drive on the Niagara Parkway and visit the village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Chippawa Battlefield, the Willoughby Historical Museum, and even Old Fort Niagara and Old Fort Erie.
Besides housing numerous restaurants and shops, the famous Clifton Hill features Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum, 4D Moving Theatre, Guinness World Records Museum, SkyWheel, Movieland Wax Museum, Dinosaur Park Miniature Golf, Cosmic Coaster Ride, Ghostblasters Dark Ride, Lego Brick City, and more attractions for the whole family.
Lastly, Niagara Falls is rather (in)famous for holding weddings and honeymoons. Depending on the wedding "package" of choice, ceremonies can be done in the traditional church/chapel (or maybe a not-so-traditional one in a casino!), by the falls, or even hovering above it in a helicopter! Casinos and hotels are never out of the loop, either, when it comes to romantic getaways.
