The City of Niagara Falls

The city of Niagara Falls in the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ontario carries the name of the waterfalls it is most popular for. In particular, it is just beside the Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. The Niagara River and Falls separate it from the other Niagara Falls, found in New York.

The city got its name from the Iroquois word "Onguiaahra" which means "The Strait." The Ongiara tribe were the region's first residents.

Niagara Falls enjoys a notably large tourist population every year. Several Hollywood movies have shot scenes at the Falls, including Niagara, starring Marilyn Monroe, and Superman II.

As of 2001, Niagara Falls had a population of 78,815. Thirty-two percent of the population is Canadian, followed by English, Italian, Scottish, Irish, French, and German ethnicities.

Apart from being the main attraction in this city, the Niagara Waterfalls is also the source for hydroelectric power, which electrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries have been dependent on. On the Canadian side, the most powerful hydroelectric stations are Sir Adam Beck 1 and 2, diverting the average flow of 202,000 cubic feet per second.

Like the rest of the country, Niagara Falls experiences long and cold winter weather, but come the summertime starting in mid-April, the city becomes hot and humid.
