Montreal Retail
In Montreal, shopping is practically synonymous to Saint-Catherine, once home to four department stores, though only one remains today: Ogilvy's, which was established in 1866. Other shopping complexes found here are the Faubourge Sainte-Catherine, Centre Eaton, les Cours Mont-Royal, Complexe Les Ailes Place Montreal, and many more. All except the first belong to Montreal's underground city. Every year, during one weekend in July, stores on this street (as well as nearby ones) participate in a sidewalk sale.
More luxurious boutiques are located at Sherbrooke, not to mention commercial art galleries. Aside from high fashion, Le Quartier du Musee is the go-to for jewelry and antiques, though Notre-Dame is officially the city's "Antique Alley".
Emerging and cutting-edge fashion designers have set up shop along Saint-Denis and Boulevard Saint-Laurent.
If you're into one-stop shopping, both Saint-Viateur and Saint-Laurent sell just about anything, from cheap electronics to Italian wares.
The Jean-Talon public market is perhaps the best place to pick up produce, whether it's inside the market itself or the stores nearby. Another good choice would be the Atwater Market on the street of the same name. Le Marche des Saveurs sells Quebec products, a.k.a. Produits du terroir.
