The City of Halifax
Halifax is officially known as the Halifax Regional Municipality in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.
Established on April 1, 1996, HRM is made up of the Dartmouth Metropolitan Area, the Town of Bedford, the Halifax Metropolitan Area, and the Municipality of the Country of Halifax. Unfortunately, a clear sign that said event hasn't been as successful is how citizens still refer to their pre-amalgamation areas instead of the collective "HRM".
Another highlight in HRM history is the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917. It was the greatest man-made explosion before the atom bomb.
HRM covers over 40% of Nova Scotia's populace, an estimated 385,000 (as of 2006) with English, Scottish, Irish, French, and German as its major ethnicities. It is the second largest coastal area (after Vancouver), and the second largest natural harbour worldwide, with over 400 kilometres of rock, beaches and bays. Besides being heavily influenced by its harbourfront in its industries, Halifax is also the resting place of many artifacts of the Titanic.
There are also more historic structures in the urban core of HRM than other municipalities in the country. "Urban core" roughly describes concentrated areas such as Halifax Harbour. On the whole, there are more than two hundred communities and neighbourhoods in HRM.
The region's temperature ranges from -5 to 28 degrees Celsius, which is distinctly cooler than the Central Canadian climate.
