Fredericton Attractions

 

Fredericton is gifted with a slew of tourist attractions, both natural and man-made. Here are but a few of them:

St. John River -- Nicknamed the "400 kilometres of inspiration", the lifeblood of the city is an enchanting place to be. The azure waters and lush, rolling hills by the riverside are a visitor's delight. Kayaking and canoeing are two fun activities allowed by the river's size.

Beaverbrook Art Gallery -- A small prestigious art gallery that boasts of a collection of considerable quality. The gallery is host to works of world-renowned artists such as Gainsborough, Turner, Krieghoff, Dali, Constable and Reynolds, as well as 19th and 20th century Canadian artists (e.g. the Group of Seven, Carr, Milne and Riopelle).

Old Government House -- Constructed between 1826 and 1828, the Old Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick. It has recently been beautifully restored.

Odell Park -- Fond of hiking? Odell Park features 75 hectares (388 acres) of old growth forest, where you can enjoy barbecue pits, picnic tables, children's play equipment, a duck pond, arboretum, and more.

New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame -- The institution was established in 1970 to honor outstanding Canadian athletes, teams and sport builders.

Loyalist Cemetery -- These burial grounds are home to the United Empire Loyalists who perished in their first winter in Fredericton in 1783. The cemetery is found on the south bank of the St. John River.

Mactaquac Provincial Park -- A Canadian provincial park with an area of around 5 kilometres (roughly 1,300 acres) and spectacular scenery. The park features a golf course, campground, two beaches, hiking trails, and cross-country skiing trails in the winter. Like many other landmarks, the park is located on the St. John River.

New Brunswick Legislative Building -- This structure is home to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, and was opened in 1882.

King's Landing -- A recreation of a New Brunswick town from the period of 1780 - 1910. The chief settlers who are represented in King's Landin are the Loyalists, and also include the Scottish, Irish and English settlers.

The Green - Found along the banks of the river, The Green boasts of biking/walking trails, a soccer field, picnic areas, and the Lighthouse, which is in itself a restaurant/tourist attraction.
