General information about Canada

Canada is a bilingual (English, French) and multicultural country occupying most of northern North America. It is the world's second largest country (fourth largest if excluding its waters).

Canada covers the land between three oceans - Atlantic Ocean in the east, Pacific Ocean in the west, Arctic Ocean in the north and shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest (Alaska, USA).

The country is a parliamentary democracy with a federal system of parliamentary government. The federation contains ten provinces and three territories which are grouped into three main regions:

  • Western Canada's provinces - British Columbia and three Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba)
  • Eastern Canada - Central Canada (Quebec and Ontario) and Atlantic Canada (three Maritime provinces - New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia plus Newfoundland and Labrador)
  • Northern Canada - three territories: Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut
